Gregor Mendel (1822–1884)
Gregor Johann Mendel was born on July 20, 1822, in Heinzendorf, Austrian Empire. He died on January 6, 1884, in Brno, Austria-Hungary. He was an Austrian monk, scientist, and naturalist who became famous for his studies of heredity. From a young age, Mendel was interested in nature and plants. He studied at the University of Olomouc and later joined the Augustinian monastery in Brno. Between 1856 and 1863, he carried out experiments with pea plants, observing how different characteristics were passed from one generation to another. His experiments allowed him to identify important principles of heredity, now known as Mendel’s laws of inheritance. In 1866, he published his important work about his experiments with plants. His research became fundamental to the development of genetics and helped scientists understand how characteristics are inherited. Mendel is considered one of the founders of modern genetics.

Meet Two Great Scientists
Charles Darwin (1809–1882)
Charles Robert Darwin was born on February 12, 1809, in Shrewsbury, England. He died on April 19, 1882. He was an English naturalist and scientist who became famous for developing the theory of evolution by natural selection. From a young age, Darwin was interested in nature and animals. In 1831, he traveled on the HMS Beagle, where he observed different species and their characteristics. These observations helped him understand that species can change and adapt over time. In 1859, he published his most important book, On the Origin of Species, in which he explained natural selection as a mechanism of evolution. His ideas transformed biology and had a major influence on modern science. Darwin is considered one of the most important scientists in history because his research helped explain the diversity of living organisms and the relationships between different species.
